Michal was silent - during registration for the after-school program, the first day she attended and many days to follow.  "That's how she is," explained her mother.  "Most of the time she chooses not to speak."  Due to a medical condition, Michal's mother preferred not to participate in any of the activities concerning her daughter, which in turn further alienated the girl.  Our counselors did not press upon Michal to speak, but rather they spoke to her, gradually surrounding her with an environment of warmth and stability.  Michal began to talk, to socialize, and to laugh as well as to hug her counselors.  She started telling her mother about school and extra curricular activities at the center.  The highlight of her birthday party was her mother's appearance during the celebration.  This incredible turn of events is difficult to formulate in words.  The best thing would be to ask Michal.  She'll tell you.
